I may be a bus boy during the summer. Anything I should know?
I may get a job being a bus boy at a restaurant for a golf course. My cousin also works their as a chef. He started working their as a bus boy too.
I was talking to my friends the other day about and said that being in the restaurant business is tough work. I know that, but is a bus boy a tough job??? I mean really, just send people to their tables!
So what i am asking is, it can't be that hard, right?
It's as hard as you wanna make it. I was a waitress from when I was 15-17 (I'm only 18, so it wasn't that long ago) and that's a lot different than being a bus boy. When you're a waiter/waitress, you show people to their tables, take their drink order, bring their drinks, take their food order, bring their food, bring any extras they want, refill as many times as you have to, check on them continuously, take their dishes as the finish them, and blah blah blah. And where I worked, if they wanted dessert, the cooks didn't make it. The waitresses made them themselves. So when I had like 15 tables that needed something and they had to wait because I had to make strawberry shortcake, there was nothing I could do about it. But for some reason, I LOVED that job. The place closed down because of marital issues with the owners but I'd give anything to be busting my chops there again.
The reason I said it's as hard as you want it to be is because, basically, it is. If you go in to work every day feeling like the world's against you then you'll be miserable 24/7 and you'll never get any tips. Even when the restaurant is busy and you can't see straight, you can't show aggravation. You could drive away people and lose your tip easily. If you're good at charming people, then you'll be fine. Even if you're not, just be nice and smile. People will respond to that in a good way. Times can get tough and you can feel like you're going to lose your mind but use the people you work with to keep you strong. If it wasn't for them, I would have passed out.
